Qualcomm has launched its flagship mobile platform, Snapdragon 865 at Annual Tech Summit. This processor got launched in December of 2019 and is expected to power most Android flagship phones of 2020.

Qualcomm has upgraded its flagship processor in almost every aspect when compared to last year’s Snapdragon 855. The newer Snapdragon 865 is supposed to have 25% more power than Snapdragon 855. Let’s see Snapdragon 865 vs 855 now.
CPU
Snapdragon 865 is an octa-core CPU with a single primary high-performance ARM Cortex-A77. This Cortex A77 is based on Kryo 585 and is assigned to run at 2.84 GHz. While three Cortex-A77 mid-performance cores clocked at 2.42 GHz. And at last four Cortex A55 cores based on Kryo 385 at 1.8 GHz for low power usage.
On the other-hand Snapdragon 855 also has an almost similar type of CPU structure. It has a high-performance Cortex A76 at 2.84 GHz. Three ARMCortex A76 clocked at 2.42 GHz for mid-performance. While also having four Cortex A55 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz for power efficiency.
When comparing both the processors there doesn’t seem much difference. But the major difference here comes with the new Kryo 585 Cortex-A77 core. That’s said to improve performance as well as power efficiency by 25%.
GPU
GPU in Snapdragon 865 is Adreno 650 that offers 20% faster GPU vs in last year’s Adreno 640 in Snapdragon 855. Qualcomm also introduced five new features in the GPU department. These features are Desktop Forward Rendering, Snapdragon Game Performance Engine, Game Color Plus, Adreno HDR fast Blend and updatable GPU drivers.
One of the great things for Smartphones in 2020 is going to be updatable GPU drivers. Qualcomm is planning to deliver updates for GPU drivers through the Play Store.
Display technology
Till now we have seen smartphone displays with a refresh rate of 90Hz and 120Hz. But now Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 is going to level up in this department. As its capable of pushing QHD+display at 144Hz or (UHD at 60Hz).
While Snapdragon 855 supports the on-device display of QHD at 120Hz or 4K Ultra Hd. This is seriously a great feature as we have seen how smooth a display becomes with higher refresh rates. With this 865 can also support an external display at 4K Ultra HD.
Good news for all PUBG lovers, PUBG is going to get HDR10 and 90 Fps support on Snapdragon 865.
Camera
Qualcomm’s 865 has also brought an improvement in the camera department. Now 865 can process images up to 200 MP in size while Video recording support at 8K at 30 fps. As 865 supports spectra 480 ISPwith “Gigapixel Speed” technology it will allow capturing 64MP images and 4K HDR videos simultaneously.
Snapdragon 855 with Qualcomm Spectra 380 supported image processing up to 192Mp and video recording of 4k HDR. While both 865 and 855 support HDR10+ Video recording.
AI Engine
The biggest improvement in Snapdragon 865 vs 855 is in the AI department. 865 has 5th generation AI engine that is twice powerful than the 4th gen AI engine on 855. Qualcomm 865 SoC can manage 15 TOPS (trillions of operation) while 855 can manage only 7 TOPS.
Now, this is some serious improvement as we are now relying on AI for various operations. And with this much power, Snapdragon 865 is going to improve the camera, face unlock, voice detection, google assistant, google lens and a lot more.
Memory
Snapdragon 865 has the support of LPDDR5 RAM memory up to 2750MHz. When compared to the last year’s Snapdragon 855 it’s great as 855 supports LPDDR4 RAM at 2133MHz.
Manufacturing Technology
Snapdragon 865 is built on TSMC’s 7nm N7P process, this is the same process that is used to make Apple’s A13 Bionic chipsets. This will allow 865 to be more power-efficient than the previous 855.
5G Modem
Snapdragon 865 brings X55 the second generation 5G modem. This modem is supposed to get 7.5Gbps over 5G vs 5Gbps on 855. 4G speeds are also going to improve from 2Gbps to 2.5Gbps with 865. This modem supports all frequency bandwidths like 5G mmWave, sub-6 GHz and others.
This modem also will not be integrated like in the previous version. But with 865 Qualcomm has made 5G modem kind of mandatory. This will make all smartphones that have Snapdragon 865 a 5G phone. This will make 5G a norm and will also increase the adaption rate of 5G. Apart from this 865 will also support 3G, 2G networks also.
