Acer Nitro 5- Budget Gaming Laptop Review

I was searching for a regular work laptop for myself. As most of my laptop use contains office work. I was really in no need of a gaming laptop. But while searching for a perfect laptop in my budget I came across Acer Nitro 5 and it really changed my mind. Although I needed a work laptop ended up buying a Gaming Laptop Acer Nitro 5.

Acer Nitro 5 2019 ranges from $650 to $900 depending on which variant you choose. The variant which I purchased is with AMD Ryzen 3550h and Radeon RX 560X graphics, 8GB of RAM, 1TB hard drive and a 256GB SSD NVMe. Its most basic variant of this laptop and with the expensive one you get Intel 9300H and Nvidia GTX 1650.

This is not the most powerful gaming laptop nor it has a 144hz display but in the price, it’s one of the best gaming laptops. And if you wanted those features like a 144hz display you can check out Acer Predator Helios 300.

Design of Acer Nitro 5

It has dimensions 363.4 x 255 x 25.9 mm and weighs around 2.3 Kg. Being full black with a red touch like Having a red-backlit keyboard, red border on track-pad and a crimson red hinge. With a nice dark webbed grill giving it a premium feel. The bezels are also very thin than last year giving an immersive feel.

Although being plastic build there is some flex when holding from screen corners. But the overall build quality is ok and as this is a budget gaming laptop it’s understandable.

Ports in Acer Nitro 5 Laptop

As for ports, you will find two USB 3.1 Type-A ports, one USB 2.0 port, one USB 3.1 Type-C port. Along with HDMI, ethernet(RJ45), single audio jack for both speaker and mic and a Kensington lock slot. There are so many ports that could satisfy almost all of your needs. Yes, a thunderbolt port is missing but its also not available on other same budget gaming laptops. But we do miss the SD card slot which should have been there.

Display On Nitro 5 Laptop

It comes with a full HD 1920 x 1080 IPS panel. Blacks are quite good and brightness is 270nits which is good. It falls short in terms of SRGB which is 68% and ADOBE RGB which is 48%. Viewing angles are good and come with an anti-glare coat which is plus point considering its alternatives.

If you are planning to use this for content creation or video editing then you might need to connect to an external display. Although For gaming, this screen is good and feels very immersive due to its very thin bezels.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard is chicklet-style and has a long key travel. Giving a comforting typing experience may not be one of the best but a good one. The touchpad on the Acer Nitro 5 Laptop is huge in size although not so great. But as Acer is using windows precision drivers it makes up for it the drawback here. It’s the click buttons that do need improvement.

Hardware

It has good hardware to play the most recent titles in medium to high settings. Although if your primary use is gaming we do recommend Acer Nitro 5 Laptop with Intel i5 i9300H and Nvidia 1650. As it will give you better gameplay and will be future proof for some more years. While we didn’t face any issues with our 3550H variant but when playing demanding titles like Tomb raider it needed medium settings.

Battery

Now, this is where things get interesting as it comes with a 59WH battery. Although this is not a very big battery but considering its hardware that is not so power-hungry. It offers a great backup so you can use it for nearly 6 to 7 hours while regular browsing and when gaming you can get up to 3 hours. Now considering other options this is a very good plus point. Having a good battery life makes it a great choice for people like me who use their laptops for work-life and casual gaming.

Why should you buy this?

For a price little higher than a good office laptop you get high power. This power can be used while gaming, video rendering. And considering that even for a gaming laptop you get such a good battery backup makes it serious consideration. A good battery backup, decent configuration, medium budget, IPS display, fast SSD and overall good value for money.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a laptop in a budget between $600 to $900 you should consider Acer Nitro 5 Laptop. Although there are certain things that need improvement the budget at which you get this deal makes it a great choice.

This was the deciding point for me, As on weekdays I use this for my office work and on weekends I enjoy some gaming without spending a fortune.
